I truly wish I could do this in Canberra but most likely I have to settle for something nearer to where I am. I was in for a surprise. What is the Canberra Balloon Spectacular? Hot air balloons from across the globe are featured and the line up changes each year. Some of the unusual balloons that have participated in the festival over the years include a pair of dancing honey bees, Vincent Van Gogh’s head, a windmill, a tropical tree, a turtle, the Skywhale,[3] a Scottish bagpiper, a hummingbird and a frog. The Hubs and I attended the Canberra hot air balloon festival for the first time in 2016 and we returned two years later in 2018. Come join me on my adventures! To get the complete experience you need to arrive before dawn to see all the balloons being laid out and inflated. Canberra mornings can get quite chilly so bring warm clothing.

Charli is the most adorable French Bulldog on the planet and we are smitten. It’s something we’ve been witnessing for more than 30 years, but it’s a sight that never grows old. Mount Pleasant Lookout, Red Hill Lookout and Black Mountain also offer beautiful outlooks, but, as always, the path the balloons will take depends on weather conditions. Stand Up Paddleboarding is a great way to take in the balloons – you might not even notice you’re getting your exercise in for the day! You’re part of the atmosphere, surrounded by the swoosh of the gas cylinders and the heat of the flames, the riders in the baskets, and hundreds of early risers. Thousands of locals and tourists reach the place to watch the spectacular view of more than thirty balloons that decorate the sky. Parking at the festival is free, but can get a little busy. It wasn’t easy! Get up close and personal and witness the hot air balloons come to life as they inflate right before your eyes. On our second visit we chose the Hotel Kurrajong Canberra as it was in easy walking distance of the Canberra Balloon Spectacular. To avoid disappointment (and complaining kids), check updates before you leave home. Oh and she really loves wine! Arrive early before dawn to watch balloons inflate and take shape. The controversial Skywhale, commissioned for Canberra’s anniversary with its rather distinct, umm, mammary glands, is back this year in a once-only appearance on Canberra Day.
