Oktoberfest: Beer and Blood is Netflix's gleefully dark new drama about the early years of the famous beer festival. Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is like watching a baseball game that only gets exciting in the bottom of the ninth.
The inspiration for the series, created and written by Steven Knight, is a real gang called the Peaky Blinders. Prank, Misel Maticevic towers over the early episodes. That’s especially true for a prequel like Peaky Blinders: Mastermind. Non-canon offerings are usually much worse. It’s a great concept for a game and it works really well. If this was an original title, with original story and original characters, it probably would have sold a tenth as many copies, but it would have been a better game. If this was the first experience you had of Peaky Blinders, you’d be forgiven for thinking each character had less than a handful of expressions. Some of the dialogue is atrocious, but that’s an issue of this effectively being official fanfiction. It’s limited by the story not actually doing anything. I can’t stress that enough. There’s just a slight disconnect between the two that feels like a chasm when viewed as a whole. Better yet, unlike the hit-and-miss nature of other puzzle adaptations like the Hex games, Peaky Blinders: Mastermind manages to … The third-person action game that lets you explore the Blinders’ territory, interact with fully voiced 4k characters with the fidelity of something out of Pixar probably isn’t going to exist and rightly so. One of the main themes in this turn-of-the-century story is old versus new: Whether it's son trying to persuade father to switch from kegs to bottled beer, or ruthless outsider dragging Oktoberfest into a new century no matter who he has to hurt, tradition and modernity are pitched against each other -- violently, of course.
