We stay at this place for 3 nights. Unpretentious but extremely charming, it has 36 rooms and suites arranged in six chalets. We ate at Hotel Butterfly,Mahdi a festive Christmas Eve dinner at Hotel Schweizerhof, Christmas pizza at Vieux-Valais da Nico, and had a wonderful raclette and fondue at Whymper-Stube. The atmospheric lounge bar serves as a cosy meeting point for the hotel’s guests. Major thing to keep in mind is that Zermatt is expensive, even by Switzerland standards.

This lovely village is a great base for hiking on the nearby Breithorn, the easiest trek of the entire Alps, rewarding the effort with a great panorama of the snow-covered mountain tops and charming villages below. Cervo Puro overlooking the Matterhorn is a great spot for lunch with modern international and Italian food while Ferdinand offers hearty raclette, fondue and bbq dishes.
