To look at the bottom of the hull, you wouldn't think the maneuverability would be good, but it will surprise you. Plenty of room for a small cooler in the roomy front storage area. A second significant problem is pronounced weathercocking. They are exactly what we need.
The seat's up a bit high, even for a SOT, and I like that, as my arms are long - and my butt stays pretty dry, considering. It does take a few paddles but moves swiftly after that. I was very disappointed with the 2015 Wilderness Ride 135 after a day paddling it. I would highly recommend! This particular model is no longer available from Wilderness Systems, but if you can pick up a used one for less than $800 or so, you will be pleased with the performance. Without a rudder, you can find yourself paddling on only one side of the boat when quartering winds reach 15 mph. The height adjustment on the backrest slipped a couple of times. I do not have a rudder and find the boat to track very well in light to moderate chop. Pros: It allows the paddler to relax a little and gives you some control during a glide. Since purchasing an Alto six months ago, I've paddled in many conditions -- breaking surf, shallow rivers, and winds up to 40 mph. I have no rudder and in some winds it weather cocks to the point I have to paddle on 1 side only to go straight.
I wouldn't pick any other boat if I could do it again. Solo from the rear seat left the nose very high, solo from the center seat was excellent. I love this barge. Boat can be hard to handle loading and unloading if you are by yourself. As an expectant mother at 6 months I was able to fit into the boat as well as maneuver with ease. Mine did not come with a rudder that I gather is available, and as such, I find that it doesn't track so great with a little bit of breeze. In the winter, you can plug the holes. An OK kayak, suitable for calm days and easy conditions.
I also found it easy to roll. I agree about the footpegs; they didn’t work great at the demo. I just purchased a ride and I love it, a great boat for fishing with plenty of storage for over night trips. The best boat we own for the many uses. Yes it is stable, but I don't feel comfortable standing. I bought is used and it is several years old, so it doesn't have the high/low seat that the newer version has.
We have used this boat in most conditions on lakes, rivers and in the ocean and it has never let us down.
