These past two days I have reviewed Jane Eyre and Agnes Grey, by Charlotte and Anne Bronte. Anne's two novels, written in a sharp and ironic style, are completely different from the romanticism followed by her sisters.
Wuthering Heights has long been a favorite of mine and remains so, with its intense, wild, violent emotion and its cast of compelling yet largely unlovable characters. Since I really enjoyed Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, I wanted to have my own copy of each book, and I was very happy when I discovered this volume from Penguin Classi.
Charlotte get 5 stars, the other sisters get 4 for me. I couldn't put this one down and when I had to, I was thinking about it constantly. The Cruelty of humans to each other and the strenght of human nature......... Emily Jane Brontë was a British novelist and poet, now best remembered for her only novel Wuthering Heights, a classic of English literature. It was delightful to have the Brontë Sisters' novels collected like this. The Bronte sisters were extraordinarily creative women whose passionate, thought-provoking and moving novels have had an enormous influence over English writing. Since I really enjoyed Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, I wanted to have my own copy of each book, and I was very happy when I discovered this volume from Penguin Classics, also including Agnes Grey, which I had never read before. Now I'm working my way through Wuthering Heights, oh my goodness, that's another review for another day!
I love Jane Eyre and as this was my second read-through of it, I still found it just as engaging and wonderful of a story (if not a little long-winded at times). Start by marking “The Brontë Collection” as Want to Read: Error rating book.
Delightful, quick read. Liked it. Great collection to read as relaxing in bed. All of the Bronte sisters had contributed poems to a collection of poetry, entitled Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell (1846).
The first 100 pages or so were a bit hard to get through because of the hardships of Jane Eyre, but after that, it was great. Collected in this book are the selected works of Anne, Charlotte, and Emily Brontë (along with their father, Patrick Brontë). The sisters lived in such times that women were not always given a fair chance in the business world. The few main characters are so dramatic over everything I couldn't help but be annoyed as I was reading it. "Jane Eyre," a two-part BBC miniseries, stars Ruth Wilson in the title role.
