From what I understand, the island and tram can get crowded during festivals or when the tree blossoms bloom. BTW the outlook east towards QUEENS-LONG ISLAND CITY is pretty good too. ROOSEVELT ISLAND is hard to beat. However, dozens of non-native invasive plants have become abundant there, often outcompeting the native species. In the 1930s, landscape architects transformed Mason’s Island from neglected, overgrown farmland into Theodore Roosevelt Island, a memorial to America’s 26th president.
