The Question and Answer section for Robert Frost: Poems is a great
Frost decided to stick to a single, simple title and, as it stands, Birches became one long exploration of the speaker's relationship to the Truth, split into three aspects: Although the majority of the poem is written in iambic pentameter, there are considerable movements away from the steady rhythm in certain lines, which we'll explore later on line by line in the analysis.
And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk. So, trochees and spondees are prevalent, as are pyrrhics and amphibrachs. By choosing the tree as a vehicle for potential transcendence, as a means of leaving the earth temporarily, Robert Frost has tapped into the mythological and biblical repositories, where the tree is both life giver and life threatener. But I was going to say when Truth broke in, With all her matter-of-fact about the ice-storm, I should prefer to have some boy bend them, As he went out and in to fetch the cows--. The force behind it comes from contrary pullstruth and imagination, earth and heaven, concrete and spirit, control and abandon, flight and return. (Line 10) Come back down to reality the speaker implies, but enjoy odd moments of freedom.
Frost once remarked, “…it was almost sacrilegious climbing a birch tree till it bent, till it gave and swooped to the ground, but that’s what boys did in those days”. And life is too much like a pathless wood, Where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs.

In some respects the poem is an extended metaphor, the birch trees representing creative life itself, their flexibility the fragile support each person needs to strike a balance and to overcome what can be a precarious human existence. It is meaningful that the poet specifies ‘both’ when he says “That would be good both going and coming back”. There is also a subtext of becoming worldly wise here where the boy practices and learns of aiming high, testing boundaries, knowing how much to push, making the most of what’s at hand and Life’s other big little lessons. This gives the poem a free flowing tone, enhanced with the use of enjambment — a style where verses break into the next line without punctuation.

The title is Birches, but the subject is birch swinging. It probably explains why the poet chose the theme of escaping to transcendence — a state of existence that is better than the normal one. It is also a personal quest to achieve balance between different worlds.Frost expresses this idea using birch trees as an extended metaphor and the recurring motif of a lively lad climbing and swinging down on them.
