Based on the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2020, Collins English Dictionary - Complete & Unabridged 2012 Digital Edition In it Asser describes how after Guthrum's defeat at the Battle of Edington followed by his surrender some days later, a peace treaty was agreed with Alfred. To keep Wessex safe, they must look beyond its borders, where Christians suffer under the same rule of the Danes. Uhtred warns Alfred that Sigefrid and his men are near and that now is the chance to kill them all. Young Ragnar and Guthrum exit. Odda the Elder or Odda of Devon was a main character in The Last Kingdom television series, and a supporting character in The Saxon Stories novel series. ("Episode 1.4"), Word of Werham’s fall has spread, and so King Alfred, Uhtred, Odda, Young Odda, Beocca and Leofric prepare for war. Father Pyrlig pleads with him to not go through with this, but he continues forward. Mildrith retorts that she has purpose and her child is with God. Aldhelm still questions why Uhtred crossed into Daneland. [6] Odda was forced to choose between Alfred and Guthrum in early 878 when an army of Vikings, led by Ubba, supposed son of the legendary Ragnar Lodbrok, landed on the north Devon or Somerset coast, possibly near modern-day Lynmouth. If he’s to fall in battle, his son cannot be king.

Little is known of Odda's early life, but he became ealdorman of Devon sometime before 878, ultimately succeeding Karl, or Ceorle, the ealdorman in 851. He was buried at Pershore Abbey. He’s decided to leave by sea.

("Episode 1.3"), Odda, Alfred, and Uhtred discuss the possibility of Uhtred joining the council and becoming an Ealdormen. What is it called?

However, Odda, who knows this to be false, makes his presence known and informs Æthelwold that the king bequeathed his crown to Alfred.

Alfred considers their land to be one, but Ceolwulf objects. ("Episode 2.3"), Odda fears that should Uhtred survive his trip to Eoferwic that he won’t return. The Pale Horseman is the second historical novel in the Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, published in 2005. They must pray and prepare. He defeated Sigefrid in combat but spared him on the condition they leave. He will look towards Kjartan and continue his blood feud.
[7] According to legend, this banner was woven by the daughters of Ragnar Lodbrok, the sisters of Ubba, and could foretell what would happen in forthcoming battle, flapping strongly for a victory and hanging limply for a defeat. Eohric was a Danish Viking king of East Anglia. The Danes have well over 1,000 men in London. Alfred the Great was King of Wessex from 871 to c.  886 and King of the Anglo-Saxons from c.  886 to 899. Year 878 (DCCCLXXVIII) was a common year starting on Wednesday of the Julian calendar. ("Episode 1.3"), Odda and Young Odda arrange Mildrith's marriage to Uhtred. Odda instructs Leofric to take Æthelwold to a monastery for him to be educated. They drowned at sea. Alfred is in agreement with Uhtred and decides they will indeed march. Under the terms of his surrender Guthrum was obliged to be baptised and leave Wessex. Unbeknownst to them, Æthelwold eavesdrops from the hall. He’s tired of resting and demands to know where his wife and son are at. [1] [2] Throughout the 870s Odda's liege, Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, was engaged in constant war with the Vikings. Uhtred wants to outflank the Danes and burn their ships. ("Episode 1.3"), Æthelwold goes to see his father, but Alfred informs him that the king is dead. He then asks about Æthelwold, however, Uhtred claims to have no knowledge of him crossing over into Daneland. He makes Uhtred that he won’t desert Alfred. The only contemporary reference to this treaty, is that of a Welsh monk Asser in his biography of Alfred,. He tells Uhtred to stand at his side and advise him against his enemies, and in return, they will talk further about wealth and reward. They watch as the ships go up in flames. ("Episode 2.2"), The kingdom of Winchester meet with Lord Ceolwulf. ("Episode 1.2"), Æthelwold is scolded by King Æthelred for being drunk in the garden. ("Episode 2.6"), King Alfred, Ælswith, and Odda get news of Æthelred’s return from war. They look over the cliff to see the Dane ships. Halfdan Ragnarsson was a Viking leader and a commander of the Great Heathen Army which invaded the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England, starting in 865. They stand outside of the fortress’ gates.
("Episode 2.6"), Odda tells Uhtred that Alfred wants him to return to Coccham. Instead, he asks for every detail from Beocca and Steapa. ("Episode 1.5"), Uhtred arrives at the hill and holds a knife to Young Odda’s throat, demanding to know what he did with his wife and child.

He then orders Odda to raise the Somerset fyrd.

He was also Mildrith's godfather.

There is a third way. The Battle of Buttington was fought in 893 between a Viking army and an alliance of Anglo-Saxons and Welsh. Clapa then informs Uhtred and Finan that a ship of traders approaches. Winchester, Wessex; Æthelred and the council discuss King Edmund of East Anglia’s plea to Wessex for an army. Odda of Deerhurst was an Anglo-Saxon nobleman active in the period from 1013 onwards.

Alfred then asks Uhtred why the brothers call him the King of Mercia.
